About SACNAS
Advancing Hispanics/Chicanos & Native Americans in Science

SACNAS is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/Chicano and Native American scientists—from college students to professionals—in attaining advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership.

SACNAS is a national society with a 37-year history of supporting minority scientists and science students. The society is comprised of over 3,000 paid members along more than 20,000 affiliates and partners from a diversity of disciplines, institutions, ethnic backgrounds, and levels along the educational trajectory. SACNAS members are dedicated to giving back through mentorship, peer networks, and professional development, and to engaging in science research and leadership of the highest caliber. The organization and its members and affiliate are committed to encouraging minority students and scientists to advance to their utmost capability.

SACNAS Mourns Founding Member's Passing
SACNAS honors the memory of lifetime member Dr. Alonzo Atencio, who passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2010 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dr. Atencio was role model, an advocate, a mentor, and an icon for hundreds of Chicanos and Native Americans in medical school and the sciences. As one of the original SACNAS founders, Dr. Atencio was responsible for gathering the original SACNAS community in 1972. He will be greatly missed.

SACNAS Regional Meetings
SACNAS cordially invites you to join us for the upcoming regional event in Lubbock, Texas:
  • TTU-SACNAS Regional Conference: February 26–28. Registration and sign-up forms are available via the meeting website. This event will be hosted by the Texas Tech University SACNAS student chapter. Registration Deadline: February 15.
Reaching Out to Our Haitian Brothers & Sisters
We invite the SACNAS community to consider volunteering your time & expertise and/or offering financial support for Haiti and all Haitians suffering as a result of the January 12 earthquake. There are many ways to take part in relief efforts, including:

Annual SACNAS National Conference
As we begin to prepare for this year’s national meeting, we invite the entire community and the nearly 3,000 attendees of the 2009 SACNAS National Conference to experience the event through pictures:
  • Sessions for 2010: SACNAS invites session proposals for the 2010 SACNAS National Conference, taking place in Anaheim, Calif. from September 30–October 3, 2010. See the session proposal page for details. Submission Deadline: February 26, 2010.
  • Photos & Memories: You’re invited to experience the 2009 conference:
    • Sights & Sounds: view photos, conference stats, speaker bios, and more.
    • Send photos to SACNAS & we’ll add them online.

  • Mathematics at SACNAS: Check out conference math highlights on the American Mathematical Society (AMS) website. The AMS is a longtime SACNAS partner and a sponsors of conference sessions and the Who Wants to be a Mathematician? game.

  • MentorNet: Indicate your SACNAS membership when you sign up and request to be paired with a SACNAS member for one-on-one mentoring. The e-mentoring infrastructure offered through the SACNAS-MentorNet partnership features an in-depth profile matching process between SACNAS protégés and mentors.

Strategic Plan
In 2008–2009, SACNAS embarked on an intensive planning process, engaging representatives of the organization’s board of directors, lifetime members, leadership staff, and other key stakeholders to develop the framework for moving the society and its mission forward.

Website Renovation
Among the focus areas of the new strategic plan are increased member engagement and major investment in the IT systems to extend the organization’s mission and provide enhanced tools and resources for member interaction. The year-long website-database renovation project kicked off with an intensive needs assessment. Members representing a diversity of stakeholder groups recently participated in an initial user survey.

The SACNAS e-nouncements is an email newsletter which features information on upcoming events, career opportunities, and SACNAS announcements of interest to the SACNAS community. A new issue is published online every two weeks.
