Program directors may send reminders to students regarding abstracts submissions through their
MySACNAS account.
For additional information on sponsoring the registration and/or dues of one or more individual, please see

SACNAS Research Presentations Overview
SACNAS offers mentorship and support through a student’s research presentation process: abstract writing and
submission; professional review and revision; presentation preparation and presentation skills improvement; professional
feedback from conference judges; and, post-conference steps for students to continue their professional development.
SACNAS offers three (3) formats for presentation of scientific research at the annual conference:
- Student Poster Presentations: Undergraduate and graduate students may apply to present a poster
describing their research. All poster presenters will be professionally judged. Undergraduate poster
presenters are eligible for recognition at the conference awards ceremony.
- Graduate Student Scientific Symposia: Graduate students are invited to apply to present their research.
Students present for twelve (12) minutes, followed by a three-minute question and answer period.
All graduate symposia submissions not selected for oral presentation will be given opportunity to present
their research at the conference as a student poster presenter. Graduate symposia presenters are eligible
for recognition at the conference awards ceremony.
- Postdoc Poster Presentations & Networking Reception: Postdocs are invited to present their research and network
with professionals from industry, government, and academia. This special event connects postdocs with employment
opportunities and research fellowships.
Accepted abstracts will be published in the conference abstract volume. To present research at the 2010 SACNAS National
Conference, please review the Abstract Submission Guidelines, Abstract Review Criteria, and, complete the Steps for Abstract
Submission.
SACNAS Abstract Submission Guidelines
Overview
All abstracts must be submitted through the SACNAS online submission system. Students will be prompted to the
submission system after registering for the 2010 conference.
Abstract word limit is 250 (maximum). No graphics or schema are allowed in SACNAS abstract submissions
All abstract submissions are professionally reviewed and students are encouraged to revise their abstract
submissions based upon SACNAS reviewer feedback, developments in on-going research, and consultations with
advisors/mentors.
Structure
Abstracts should include the following:
- Title (not part of abstract 250-word count limit)
- Introduction
- Hypothesis, purpose, or objective (as appropriate per discipline)
- Essential methods and materials used
- Results/predicted results*
- Summary and conclusion
* Note to all research abstract submitters: if research results are not available at the time of the submission deadline,
students are strongly encouraged to submit predicted results, discussing the significance and implications of predicted results.
Students are similarly encouraged to discuss differences between predicted and actual results when presenting research at the
SACNAS conference.
Please visit the SACNAS Research Presentation Resources page for tips and tutorials on abstract writing, poster
creation, sample posters, presentation tips and more .
Authorship
Submission of an abstract must be completed by the individual presenting the research at the SACNAS conference.
If the abstract is selected for presentation, but the presenter listed is unable to present for any reason, the
presentation space will be forfeited; SACNAS cannot guarantee other members of the research group may serve as substitute
presenters.
For research abstracts that are co-authored by a group of researchers, please note that SACNAS strongly encourages
all students to present research individually. Presenting to peers, mentors and professional judges at the SACNAS
conference is an incredibly beneficial professional development experience. SACNAS provides a supportive and academically
rigorous environment for student presenters. Multiple presenters of a single abstract submission may be allowed,
however all applicants must contact Nancy Rocha (nancy@sacnas.org) prior to abstract submission deadlines.
Audiovisual and Equipment
Poster presenters are prohibited from using audiovisual equipment, electrical outlets, laptops or tables. Use of
these or other additional equipment will result in disqualification of the presentation.
Poster board dimensions are 8ft (wide) x 4ft (tall).
Posters may be smaller, but no larger than this.
Graduate student scientific symposia (oral) presentations may be supported with additional equipment/materials such as:
PowerPoint/LCD projector, overheads, or slides. A laptop computer will be provided by SACNAS for all oral presentations
that includes a PowerPoint/computer-aided presentation.
SACNAS Abstract Review Criteria
Each abstract will be reviewed by a minimum of two discipline-specific professionals. The Student
Presentations Committee have developed the following criteria for review of abstracts:
- Hypothesis/purpose/objective of research clearly stated
- Methods and materials essential to the research identified
- Results, or predicted results clearly represented and logically support proposed or predicted conclusions
- Scientific merit and future directions of the research
- Well developed writing skills
