Distinguished Awards
The SACNAS Distinguished Awards, presented at the society’s annual national
conference, recognize those who have dedicated themselves to science, education
and mentoring. Awardees are those who have reached the top of their field
and continue to serve as role models for the next generation of minority scientists.
Call for Nominations
Individuals are encouraged to nominate colleagues or themselves for the SACNAS
Distinguished Awards. Names of nominees and nominations materials should be
submitted via email to SACNAS Awards Committee.
Award Details
Award recipients will be presented with recognition of their award during a special
plenary awards ceremony and meal function at the SACNAS National Conference. Award
recipients receive registration, travel, and lodging to the attend the conference, as
well as honorary lifetime membership in the organization.
Awards Eligibility
All nominees must have a demonstrated record of encouraging minority students to
pursue advanced science degrees, in addition to the eligibility requirements for
the specific award (see below).
SACNAS Distinguished Scientist Award
Criteria: Hold a PhD or other doctoral degree in a science,
engineering, or mathematics research field and be 45 years of age or older. Currently conduct an active research
project and participate in research and educational activities at the national level.
SACNAS Distinguished Undergraduate Institution Mentor Award
Criteria: Hold a PhD or other doctorate degree and a faculty position
at a four-year undergraduate institution. Participate in minority education activities at the local and/or national
level.
SACNAS Distinguished Community/Tribal College Mentor Award
Criteria: Hold a faculty position at a community or tribal college.
Participate in minority education activities at the local and/or national level.
SACNAS Distinguished Professional Mentor Award
Criteria: Hold a staff or administrative position at a college or
university, within government, or in private industry for at least 10 years. Participate in minority education,
advocacy, or mentoring activities at the local and/or national level.
SACNAS Distinguished STEM Education Award
Criteria: Hold a faculty position at a K-12 or postsecondary educational institution
for at least 10 years. Contribute to K-12 or postsecondary science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) education for
minority students. Have a demonstrated record of developing programs/materials encouraging precollege minority students to excel
in STEM education or supporting students/faculty to excel as science educators.
SACNAS Distinguished Service to the Society Award
Criteria: Hold an annual or lifetime membership in the
organization for a minimum of 5 years. Have demonstrated exceptional, sustained efforts to enhance and
further SACNAS, its programs, or its mission through significant volunteer activities on behalf of SACNAS.
Purpose: The SACNAS Distinguished Service to the Society Award
honors outstanding service and is presented annually to recognize SACNAS members who have contributed significant
volunteer efforts on behalf of the organization.
Deadline: April 16, 2010
SACNAS Distinguished Awards nomination packet requirements include the following materials:
- Cover letter for nomination (including award (see above) for which the individual is nominated)
- CV of nominated individual (4 pages max.)
- 100- to 300-word third person narrative biography of nominated individual (NOT a CV Biosketch)
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Supporting materials related to the eligibility requirements (see above) of the award for which the individual is nominated, such as (5 pages max.):
- details regarding the individual's record of encouraging minority students to pursue advanced science degrees
- research interests and honors, accolades, or awards
- articles written about the individual
